Meeting the needs of 21st century learners is of particular importance in the sciences, as we must realize that the innovators of tomorrow are sitting in our classroom today. As a science teacher, my style leans towards the use engaging lectures, inquiry-based labs, and real-world connections, with particular importance being placed upon the real world connection to content. In a textbook, concepts are dry and unapproachable, yet when you include natural inquiry of students and robust multimedia supports, lasting understandings can occur. The goal is simple - Teach content in a manner supported by best practice while avoiding the pitfalls of our pedagogical predecessors - 21st century learners, raised in the rapidly-expanding digital space, do not tolerate boredom....but come to think of it, should they need to? The answer is an unequivocal "NO!" in this regard, with the onus of engagement being placed squarely on the teacher.
